Töj & Böj

Töj & Böj Biography

Töj & Böj (Stretch & Bend) is a Swedish band consisting of Jonas Ahlgren, Jalmar Staaf (former member of Ridis) and Jenny Mattsson. (All born in 1974-75). The three members met in the 1990s. Having found out that there tended to be a lot of spontanous singing every time they got together, they finally decided to form a band in 2005. This was on a trip to Barcelona, where the songs "Gotland" and "Estland" were written. The band's first songs were covers of famous folk tunes, with new lyrics about the cultural and political situation on certain geographical areas. They were sung a capella in harmony. In 2006 the band started to promote their music through a website and a Myspace page. In the summer of 2007, Töj & Böj wrote the song "Wermland" about Jenny's childhood in the Swedish province with the same name. This song was their first to be accompanied by instruments, and a music video was filmed in Slottskogen in Gothenburg.

In December 2007 and July 2008, the band went to Berlin, with the mission to write a new song about Germany. This was part of an art exchange project, held by students at the Swedish Royal College of Fine Arts. They stayed in an appartment just next to a field where the Berlin wall used to stand. This was reflected in their new song "Tyskland" (Germany). Since then, the band members have continued to travel together, on the purpose to write new songs about their experiences, and reflections about their destinations. In 2009 Töj & Böj took the ferry from Stockholm to Åland Islands, and in 2010-2012 they visited Scotland , Poland and Ireland. This have resulted in songs and videos about all these countries. Their music have been described as suggestive, repetitive and melodramamatic, but their most recent songs have been more built up on beats, why these have been remixed by various djs.

In 2009 the band had their first live performance at a party, backed up by 3 musicians playing keyboard, cello and bass. In May 2010 Töj & Böj performed live at "Moderna dansteatern" (The Modern Dance Theatre) in Stockholm, in an act where the two dancers Tove Brunberg and Ofelia Jarl Ortega translated Töj & Böj's songs into modern dance numbers.

Millior

Millior Biography

Millior is the colloquial name for a group consisting of the three singers Kärstin, Liljan and Millior, under which names three sisters from Sweden have performed and recorded music and films since early childhood. Kärstin (born in 1982) recorded her first song "Här kan man gå" (You can walk here) in 1984, Liljan (born in 1985) recorded "Barnavisa", a medley of famous children's songs, in 1987, and Millior (born in 1990) debuted in 1991 with "Hallå hej då" (Hello Good bye). In the early 90s, the main band constellation consisted of Kärstin & Liljan, and in the 00s most songs have been performed by Millior, sometimes backed up by her sisters. Currently (2010), Liljan and Millior are collaborating closely with their next project called "Milly and Lilly".

Since they started, the sisters have always written their own songs, which have, in most cases, been arranged and produced by their older brother. Today, Millior is also working in the recording studio. Many of their songs have been used in a number of art installations, videos and student work, e.g. "Helgklocka.com" in 2005, in which two of the trio's songs were performed by a choir, or "Mama Matryoshka" in 2007 in which Kärstin was dressed as a nesting doll. In April and May 2009, the trio performed live on stage for the first time, both in Stockholm and Näsåker (a small town in the north of Sweden).

Starting making typical children's music, the sisters have continued writing songs in a lot of different styles, e.g. 80s Italo Disco, 90s Techno Rave, Mediaeval Christian hymns, Sad sailor songs, Musical Theatre, Russian folk music, Jazz, Country pop etc. Since 2003, their music and films have been released on self-published cd-r and dvd-r discs, and as downloadable files on the internet.

Apoliva

Apoliva Biography

In April 2009, commercial TV stations in Sweden started to air a commercial for Apoliva (a collection of Face and Body care products sold by the Swedish pharmacy company "Apoteket"). The advertising agency Forsman & Bodenfors had focused on the products' suitability for the nordic climate. The clip was directed by Johan Renck (alias Stakka Bo), and featured a female model (Adina Fohlin) in front of rainclouds and thunderbolts, seemingly without much make-up – quite an uncoventional way to sell beauty products. The model was miming to an old Swedish folk song – "Gammalståschans hjärtesuck", with new lyrics written by a commercial Music agency called Music Super Circus. The song was performed by Dead Mono (a commercial music studio) featuring the singer Sarah Assbring a.k.a. El Perro Del Mar.

Many viewers were terrified by the model's appearance, and someone started a group on Facebook called "We who are afraid of the girl in the Apoliva commercial". The number of members increased dramatically, to more than 90000 people. The clip got more hits on Youtube than any other Swedish commercial ever. Other viewers reacted by creating a countless number of new groups, e.g. "We who love the Apoliva commercial", "We who hate the Apoliva commercial", "I'm not afraid of the Apoliva girl", "I'm afraid of people who are afraid of the Apoliva commercial". On Youtube, many users uploaded home made clips with their own versions of the commercial. Media started to report about the clip's huge impact on the viewers, that hadn't been expected at all. Apoteket announced that they would not replace the clip, but let Adina feature their forthcoming commercials as planned.

In May 2010, the first follow-up started to air. This time Adina was miming to a song titled "Där drömmen blir sann", performed by Victoria Bergsman from the band Taken By Trees. The approach was apparently warmer and happier this time (not stopping some viewers to start Facebook groups such as "We who still are afraid of the girl in the Apoliva commercial"). The song was preciously released on the b-side of Taken By Tree's single "Watch the Waves", but with English lyrics. As the commercial was shown, the Swedish version of the song was released as well, as a digital download file on iTunes.

Falo & Ulla

Falo & Ulla Biography

Falo & Ulla was a musical duo, under which name the two brothers Jalmar (born in 1975) and Joel (born in 1970) Staaf recorded music and films in the 1980s. Living in Ångermanland in the north of Sweden, they formed their alter egos in 1984, and became a married, middle aged couple, who had a weakness for the nature, flower power and progressive folk music. Musically they were inspired by songs they had heard on Swedish television in the early 80s, when waiting for children's programme. Thus, they got influenced by Jojje Wadenius, Karin Liungman & James Hollingworth, Isterband, Philemon Arthur & the Dung, Mora träsk, Per Dunsö & Ola Ström (known from the tv-shows Toffelhjältarna and Solstollarna).

Falo & Ulla recorded some cover songs, especially in the beginning. More often they wrote new songs, and sometimes they were distinctly inspired by a certain song, and would have made a cover version if only the duo had remembered it correctly. In those cases Falo & Ulla wrote a completely new song, but on the same theme as the original. Most of Falo & Ulla's songs were played on a Yamaha Portasound PS-3 PS-3 keyboard, while others were played on the piano, guitar or various percussion instruments. Falo built his own synthesizer in Technology class, that was used for the song "Snögubben" (The Snowman).

Falo & Ulla continued recording frequently until 1989, when a couple of music cassettes were compiled to resume their work so far.

Philemon Arthur & the Dung

Philemon Arthur & the Dung Biography

Philemon Arthur and the Dung is a group from Scania, Sweden. The band consists of two unidentified males known by the pseudonyms "Philemon Arthur" and "The Dung. The group's exact whereabouts and identities are known only by a select few representatives of their record label, Silence.

The two members were possibly brothers, or next-door neighbors, born in the early 1950s, and first began playing music together in 1962 – then known as The Popbeams. Philemon Arthur would play an accordion, or an old guitar he had borrowed, while The Dung would accompany him on a custom-built drum kit composed of household items, such as pots, pans, cookie jars, and radiators. Lead vocals were performed by both of them. They got influenced by the bands at the time (e.g. Larry Finnegan, Rolling Stones, Beatles, The Who), and after initially playing mostly covers they eventually passed on to write their own material. Philemon Arthur is credited with writing all of their songs, and their music was recorded on a lo-fi tape recorder owned by Philemon Arthur, at his grandma's attic.

In the late 1960s, the music scene in Sweden started to change radically. Influenced by the American underground Scene, there were bands playing progressive rock, folk rock, either instrumental or with lyrics in Swedish. This was a reaction against the stanhdardized commercial Music, and it was the source to the Swedish Music Movement, or "Progg", that was going to play a major role in the Swedish Music scene in the early 1970s. One motto was that "Anyone can play music". The time was right for Philemon Arthur & the Dung to promote their eccentric music. They sent demo tapes to several radio programs, e.g. "Bandet går" (Recording in progress), which gained them some exposure. The duo got contact with some prominent people from the music movement, just when the independent record label Silence was founded, to which progg bands were signed. In the summer of 1970, there were two music festivals illegally organized at Gärdet in Stockholm. "Träd, gräs & stenar" (Trees grass and stones) – one of the bands from Silence, performed Philemon Arthur & the Dung's song "In kommer Gösta". Soon, Philemon Arthur & the Dung was signed to a contract at Silence Records. The duo has said that the record company had to nag them to record their album.

Anders Lind worked as a studio engineer at Silence, and handed over a professional Revox tape recorder, as well as studio microphones, to be used by the duo when recording their album. However, he had to go buying some cheaper microphones, because they didn't want to achieve too good sound quality. In 1971, Philemon Arthur & the Dung released their self-titled debut album, and the opening track "In kommer Gösta" (Gösta enters) became a hit. In 1972 the album went on to win the award for "Best Group Production" at the Swedish equivalent of the Grammy Awards. People from the commercial music industry were upset by the jury's choice of such a low fidelity production, characterized by silly nonsense lyrics, and simple untuned instruments. Neither Philemon Arthur nor the Dung did show up at the ceremony to receive their prize, but they were representated by a tape recorder on stage. This unprecedented turn of events is cited to have been the cause for the music industry putting the awards ceremony down for 15 years.

Their successful debut album wasn't followed up until 15 years later, in 1987, when Silence released a music cassette containing 24 previously unreleased songs featuring the duo. These were recorded during the same sessions that would produce their first album, but on their own lo-fi tape recorder. Modern sound engineering had made it possible to filter some of the noise out. This cassette came in a tin can (much like those used for percussion by the group) that had to be opened using a can opener. The label on it said "Real Philemon Arthur-distortion". The duo had previously expressed dislike towards the high sound quality of their previous album, and claimed to have lost the feel and sound of what they were trying to accomplish. In 1992, 20 years after getting their music award, Philemon Arthur & the Dung's debut album was released on cd by Silence. 13 tracks from the 1987 cassette were included as bonus tracks. And in 2002, celebrating 30 years, a second cd was released, containing the remaining tracks from the cassette, along with 19 previosly unreleased tracks, still from the same sessions.

The group attained cult status in part due to their unique brand of homegrown, low fidelity music. Over 40 years later, they are consider pioneers and icons of progressive music, and remain a mysterious presence in the Swedish entertainment industry. Many groups, particularly fellow progg artists, have cited Philemon Arthur and the Dung as an influence. Bob hund is a Scanian band formed in 1991, that has been influenced by the duo. In fact, Philemon Arthur and the Dung were fans, and forwarded a demo tape to Silence, resulting in a recording contract for the band. A documentary film about Bob hund (titled "Filmen om Bob hund") from 1999, includes a scene accompanied by a newly recorded song by Philemon Arthur & the Dung – a cover of Bob hund's "Reinkarnerad exakt som förut". Falo & Ulla was a group that was inspired by Philemon Arthur & the Dung in the 1980s.

Many hypotheses regarding the duo's true identities have been made, a prevalent one being that they are Mikael and Thomas Wiehe, who would also become influential figures in progressive music, or fellow progg group "Risken finns". To maintain the confusion, Philemon Arthur & the Dung has, as well as these groups, neither denied nor verified these rumours. Their scanian dialect tells that they were living in the north of Scania, probably around Göinge. In 1987, The Swedish singer Magnus Uggla released a cover album , on which "In kommer Gösta" was included, and credited to "Mats Larsson". An 18 pages long thread on the Swedish internet forum Flashback, points out an unknown man in Helsingborg as one of the members.

Philemon Arthur & the Dung have given some interviews in connection to their album releases, but not without hiding their faces behind masks. The truth value of their answers is always questionable. They claim that they want to remain anonymous to avoid affecting the residents of their small town. In 2010 a documentary film about the duo was made by Jonas Johannesson and Martin Snygg, titled "Jakten på Orkestern utan ansikte". (Seeking the faceless orchestra). Their purpose was not to unmask the duo, but to unravel stories by interviewing people who had been connected to them somehow, and tell all the anecdotes.

Ridis

Ridis Biography

Ridis started as a student project at Södra Latin's High school in Stockholm, formed by Sofie Sörman, Jalmar Staaf (former member of the duo Falo & Ulla) and Petter Bäck, who all studied at the musician program. As a graduation project in 1996, the three members obtained a portastudio, recorded a demo tape and wrote an essay about their work. In the following years the band had some gigs at festivals and parties, and they put together a second demo tape in 1998. For their live performances, Ridis needed some backup, why additional band members were included (e.g. Miriam on cello, Jonas on bass). During this time, Sofie was also singing in the pop band "Charlots". In 2000 an animated music video was created by Emma Rendel, for the Ridis song "Jag hatar känslor" (I hate feelings).

The Reynolds Girls

The Reynolds Girls Biography

The Reynolds girls were a british vocal duo, comprising Linda (born in 1971) and Aisling (pronounced "Ashling", born in 1973) Reynolds. The sisters were of Irish descent, and grew up in Liverpool. After giving Pete Waterman a demo tape, they were signed to by that time prosperous record label PWL. Their debut single "I'd Rather Jack" was produced by Stock Aitken Waterman, and was released in February 1989. The lyrics were a response to music critics and radio dj:s who ignored the younger pop acts in the UK at the time.

In the UK Singles Chart, "I'd Rather Jack" peaked at number 8 in April 1989, and remained on the chart for 12 weeks. A bit surprising when it used to be the well-known singers (like Rick Astley or Kylie Minogue) who reached such success. The girls were put on Top Of The Pops to perform their hit single, but the next week the song surprisingly went down instead of up, which was quite unusual. Shortly after, they were dropped by the label, probably due to some arguing about the girls' image and role in the production. A second single, "Get Real" was released on the small label "Renotone Limited", but it failed to chart, and the duo split. In the early nineties Linda was singing in a band called "Hype", but they never broke through commercially, or released any records.

Today, "I'd Rather Jack" is often listed as one of the worst pop songs in history. In 2007 "I'd Rather Jack" was voted #53 of "The 100 Most Annoying Pop Songs We Hate To Love", on a BBC3 TV show. In connection to this, Pete Waterman (Hitman), Emma Griffiths (Presenter), Paul Johnstone (Reynolds Girls Fan), Tim Byrne (Manager) and Sally Lindsay (Actor) gave their comments. Paul Johnstone said that "I'd Rather Jack" was Stock Aitken Waterman's protest song against the radio stations; even though their singles ruled the charts, they weren't played on the radio. Tim Byrne thought that Pete Waterman just tried to prove a point, that you could take any two people off the street and have a hit record with them. Regarding the duo's one hit wonder status, Pete Waterman said that you can't get the public to buy something they don't believe in, and The Reynolds Girls, they never believed in. He also claimed that if "I'd Rather Jack" had been given to, for example Mel & Kim, it would have become a number one record.

Midi Maxi & Efti

Midi Maxi & Efti Biography

Midi, Maxi & Efti was a band comprising the twin sisters Midi and Maxi Berhanu, and Freweyni "Efti" Teclehaimanot – all of them born in 1976. Midi and Maxi were refugees from Ethiopia, who had come to Sweden with their parents in 1985. Efti was born in a guerrilla camp in Eritrea during the war against successive Ethiopian governments. She spent two years in a refugee camp in Sudan, before coming to Sweden in 1985. The three girls finally met in the Stockholm suburb of Akalla, and became best friends.

At the age of 13, they used to spend nights and weekends hanging out at "Sergels torg" – a public square in the center of Stockholm, and felt very cool. Several times they were asked by strangers if they were interested in singing or modeling. One of these strangers seemed to be serious, and through him, they got in contact with the music producers Alexander Bard, Anders Wollbeck and Per Adebratt – the men behind many successfull bands at that time, e.g. Army Of Lovers. The girls were given some instrumental demo songs, and started to write their own lyrics. They wanted to share their experiences, and wrote about their childhood in Africa, or just as well something that had happened last Friday night in the center of Stockholm. The long lasting conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea could sometimes have an effect on their friendship, which is described in the song "Sisterhood of Africa". Midi, Maxi and Efti were rapping their lyrics on top of a Ragga beat with African influences, and all of a sudden their first single "Bad Bad Boys" was released in April 1991. It reached number 11 in the Swedish charts, and their follow-ups "Masenko" and "Ragga steady" reached number 39 and 22 respectively. Jean-Pierre Barda and Camilla Thulin, (who also worked with Army of Lovers), did the Africa-inspired styling of the girls. E-type and Johan Renck (alias Stakka Bo) were also involved in the production.

After a successfull year in Sweden, Midi, Maxi & Efti went on tours in Europe, South Africa and the US, but at a strict request of their parents, they continued their Middle school studies in Akalla. A self-titled album and two singles were released in the US in 1992, and a music video for Ragga Steady was directed by Frank Sacramento. A couple of songs were featured in American movies (e.g. "Masenko" in "For Love Or Money" 1993, with Michael J Fox and Gabrielle Anwar), and "Bad Bad Boys" could be heard in an episode of "Beavis and Butt-head" in 1994. The group was offered a record contract by one of the biggest labels in US, but declined since Midi and Maxi's parents wanted the girls to continue studying, and the trio split up. After finishing Middle School, Efti was signed in London and went there for one year. However, The record project was fizzling out, and Efti returned to Sweden and started a coffe house business instead. Midi and Maxi have been living in London for many years, and Efti has no contact with them anymore.

There have been many rumours about new material to be released by the three members. In 1995 it was said that Midi and Maxi had recorded eight new songs together with Mats Thunborg, among them a single called "Unity", and in August 2000 Efti was expected to release a single, but nothing happened.

In 2007, Efti did the vocals for one of the tracks on the Swedish producer and hip hop artist Dr Alban's album "Back To Basics". According to Wikipedia, she has also released a solo single called "One night". A documentary film about the trio, titled "I like it like it was", was made in 2009 by director Farnaz Arbabi, and designer Parasto Backman, both of them old schoolmates with Midi, Maxi & Efti. Arbabi has said that the trio lately has been very sought after by media, but never give any interviews, which has resulted in a "Garbo Effect" and inflated the excitement around the group.

Since 2009, Efti is collaborating with Petter Wallenberg – a writer, producer and DJ working in both London and Stockholm. They have recorded some ragga/electro beats to which Efti is singing in Tigrinya – a language spoken in Eritrea. Efti has performed at Mums Mums – a performance art night club in Stockholm organized by Petter Wallenberg, and she is also featured in the club's magazine.

Isterband

Isterband Biography

Isterband was a school band consisting of students from Vanstaskolan's Middle school in Ösmo, near Nynäshamn in Sweden. It was formed in 1978, when Roland Hermin started to work there as a music teacher. Roland was a guitarist and bassist, who in the 1970s had toured and recorded together with Ted Gärdestad, Magnus Uggla, Harpo and Banana band, among others. Right from the start, Roland asked his students if they wanted to start a band. Isterband performed at speach days at the end of the terms, and the set-up of the band varied as people started and left the school. Anyhow, after three years, the students who had been playing throughout Middle school recorded some songs on tape to keep as a memory.

The tape happened to be played on a local radio station, and in the end of 1981 Isterband was signed by Rixi – an under label to Mariann Records. They released a single which contained the song "Röda skor", that became a hit, even though it was taken down by the critics. Now Isterband consisted of 13 members – most of them born in 1965: Maria Lindberg (vocals on "Johan och jag"), Roger Olkerud (bass, vocals on "Röda skor"), Karin Delvert (vocals on "13 år"), Per (piano on "Unga starka män"), Bengt Johansson (percussion), Lena Martinelle (piano), Mary-Ann Borg (vocals), Maria Gustavsson (vocals on "Superstar"), Katarina Örtlund (vocals on "Femte hjulet"), Maisi (piano, flute and vocals on "Gott nytt år"), Gerhard "Kuno" Kunosson (guitar), Kenneth "Kenta" Söderberg (wrote lyrics), and Johan Tigenius (played drums, and he was the only remaining member from the band's original set-up). In 1982 Isterband released an album of songs that had been written through the years. Roland Hermin had written the music (exept for one song that was written by Kuno), and Kenta Söderberg wrote the lyrics. Jan Svensson (more known as Harpo) did the whistling on "Röda skor". Isterband also wrote a book about their work, which included Music sheets for all songs featured on the album.

Isterband's next single "Johan och jag" was, as well as "Röda skor" played a lot on the radio. In 1984 Mariann started to promote a new teenage band called "The Pinks", and that might explain the sudden absence of Isterband. The Pinks even got a hit with "Helena och jag", which was a retitled cover version of Isterband's "Johan och jag".

Some of the band members have continued their music careers. Johan Tigenius has played drums with Örjan Stenbom (alias Simon Rowe), Janne Bark and Ulf Lundell. Gerhard Kunosson is currently working at Rikskonserter (organizing concerts in Sweden). Roland Hermin is (2010) still working as a music teacher in Nynäshamn.

Inger Nilsson

Inger Nilsson Biography

Inger Nilsson (born in 1959) is a Swedish actress. She started her career 9 years old, when playing the main role in the tv-series based on Astrid Lindgren’s famous children’s books about Pippi Longstocking. The production was a Swedish-West German co-operationm and the first episode was broadcast in February 1969. Since it was a huge success, the series was exported and shown in many countries. This is still the most popular screen version of Pippi Longstocking, being repeated numerous times by Swedish TV. Later, the 13 episodes were re-edited and released as two feature films: ”Pippi Longstocking” and ”Pippi goes on board”.

Besides acting, Inger was also singing the theme song "Here Comes Pippi Longstocking", written by Jan Johansson. It was released as a single in the Nordic countries, and was also featured on an album, on which the remaining tracks contained stories picked from the episodes. The success was followed-up by two feature films in 1970, ”Pippi in the South Seas” and ”Pippi on the run”. These movies included a couple of new songs that were released as music tracks on two more story albums.

In 1977 Inger Nilsson released a single in Sweden under her own name. it was disco song titled "Keep On Dancing", but didn't sell very well. After school Inger studied to become a secretary, but was still open to continue with the acting. Although she has never regretted playing the part of Pippi, it has been a problem that people always recognize her. Decades after the series was filmed, producers and directors still relate her to Pippi. Eventually Inger started to study acting, and since 1987 she has performed in small theaters in Sweden. She has aso worked as property master, and in 2000 she played a role in the film ”Gripsholm”, by the Swiss director Xavier Koller. Since 2007 she appears on German television, in the TV-series ”Der Kommissar und das Meer”, as the forensic pathologist Ewa.

In 2009 Inger was a celebrity contestant on a Swedish Reality TV show, "Kändisdjungeln" (the Celebrity Jungle). Inger is (2010) currently working as a doctor’s secretary in Stockholm, occasionally taking stage roles.

Charlots

Charlots Biography

Charlots was a Swedish pop band formed in Stockholm in 1994. The members were Per Lindén (Guitars), Love Eklund (Synthesizers), Sofie Sörman (Vocals), Mattias Carlsson (Drums) and Sven Granath (Bass). On their first single Lars Antonsson played drums, and Roger Kallin bass. Love and Sofie were schoolmates at the musician program at Södra Latin's High school, and Sofie was at the same time singing in another band, Ridis, formed by some other schoolmates as a school project. Like many other Swedish pop bands in the 1990s, Charlots released records only in Japan and Germany. Nevertheless, they also climbed the charts in former Yugoslavia.

Today Sofie lives in Paris, where she is involved in various projects, performing and recording music. On her Myspace page she presents mostly jazz music. Love lives in London, and runs mrlove.org – a website about his impressive collection of Depeche Mode records.

At the request of her parents, she started to study commercial arts in Stockholm, after finishing school. But she got contact with ”Vårat gäng” (Our team) – a very popular group in the 1940s consisting of music-talented children teens, that toured around Sweden playing Swing music. Bibi joined the team and toured for one year and a half. In 1948 the group was split, and Bibi finished her studies, but continued to sing in various jazz bands. After a while she was engaged as a vocalist in Carl-Henrik Norin’s jazz band, and recorded her first 78 rpm record in 1949 (under her stage name Bibbi Johnson). She was also singing in Thore Swanerud’s jazz band, and the vocal groups "The Serenaders" and ”The Metronomers”.

In 1951 Bibi left for the US on an immigration visa, and started to sing on New York’s night clubs, and was soon working all over the east US. It was at this point she started to call herself "Bibi Johns" on stage. She was signed by RCA Records, and released three vinyl singles in 1952. After winning the TV-show ”Chance of a lifetime” she could afford to fly back to Sweden to visit her parents. The German producer Nils Nobach from the record label Electrola, happened to be visiting Sweden at that time, and he heard one of Bibi's US recordings. He talked her into coming to Cologne to record for the German market, before returning to the US. Her German records became big hits overnight (e.g. "Bella Bimba", which has become one of the evergreens of German pop songs), and within a short time she was the star of German film musicals like "Schlagerparade", "Liebe, Jazz und Übermut", "Wehe, wenn sie losgelassen" (with Peter Alexander) and many others.

Occasionally Bibi visited Sweden to record songs, e.g. a Swedish version of "Bella Bimba". However, she had her biggest audience in West Germany, where she was the star of the 50's. In fact, she was the first in a row of Swedish Schlager singers that succeeded in Germany from late 50's to early 70's. In the early 1960's Bibi returned to Sweden to produce her own stage shows, for tours in the folk parks. For the first time she now had hit singles in her native country, e.g. "Leka med elden", "Bröllopet" and "Bibi's Bossa Nova". In the 1960s, when the sale of her records subsided somewhat, Bibi started to concentrate on Television, working in the UK (in Rolf Harris Show) and hosting several German TV Shows (e.g. "Have you met Miss Johns?"). Until the 1990s, Bibi Johns could be seen frequently on German television.

In 1966 she competed in the German Pop Festival in Baden-Baden, but didn't reach the final. Until 1971, Bibi continued to release a couple of singles each year, both in Sweden and Germany. In 1975 she decided to try painting again, and started to study fine arts in Munich. Since then, she has made a career as an artist, exhibiting her paintings around Germany. In 1983 Bibi was hosting "Melodifestivalen" in Swedish TV (The Swedish pre-selection for Eurovision Song Contest), and since this was the night when the famous Swedish singer Carola Häggkvist made her breakthrough, the clip of Bibi interviewing a young Carola has been repeated continously in Swedish television ever since.

From 1992 through the late 90s, a record label named "Bear Family" released most of Bibi Johns' German and US recordings, compiled on 4 CD albums. Most of her Swedish recordings are still only available on the original 78 rpm records, vinyl singles and EP:s. Only a few of her Swedish songs can be found on CD compilations of hits from the 60s. The only vinyl LP ever released by Bibi Johns is a Swedish EP compilation from the 60s. To her 70th birthday, Bear Family released a CD with 24 previously unreleased tracks that Bibi recorded between 1972 and 1998, for German and Swiss radio stations. Many times through her career, Bibi was trying to get away from her image as a Schlager and pop singer, and on these radio sessions, she had the opportunity to record songs that she really wanted to sing. Today (2010) Bibi lives in Pullach near Munich together with the classical pianist Alex Racic.

Bel Air

Bel Air Biography

Bel Air is a Swedish vocal group consisting of the three sisters Catharina, Cristina and Helena Lekander. They grew up in the small Swedish town Åtvidaberg. As teenagers they formed a group called Lekander Sisters in 1975, and performed in several talent shows around Sweden. They won some national finals, e.g. "Sommarchansen" in Malmö and "Barnens dags talangtävling" (Children's day's talent show) in Stockholm. In 1983 Catharina and Cristina recorded some backing vocals for the band "Bahrock" in Linköping. In 1985 the sisters were signed by Polar Music, and participated in Melodifestivalen, the swedish pre-selection for Eurovision Song Contest. The title of the song was "1+1=2", and the name of the group was changed to Bel Air. After their first single a whole album was planned, but probably due to a low score in the competition, only one follow up single was released. However, the three members continued their music careers in various projects, and they still perform together every now and then.

In July 2005 Bel Air had a reunion and performed 1+1=2 at Stockholm Pride Festival's SchlagerPride evening, among other bands that had participated in Melodifestivalen through the years. Today Catharina is working as a music teacher in Kalmar, and Helena is a member of a band called SoulCraft, as well as the gospel choir Voice. She also has a Myspace page, where she promotes her own music.

Bel Air interviewed by Viveca Ringmar in Swedish Television, Café Norrköping, 1985 March 4.
Transcription translated into English

Viveca: …called Bel Air, but four years ago they sounded like this, the Lekander sisters:

Viveca: That was 1+1=2, but you are three - Three sisters from Åtvidaberg, and let's see if I remember your names: Catharina, Cristina and Helena. Catharina and Cristina are twins, and Helena is little sister. So this is Bel Air, that we could watch in the Swedish pre-selection for Eurovision song contest in television last Saturday. And this clip we saw, it was four years old, this snippet that aired before your performance. It's clear that you have changed style since then!

Cristina: Yes, you could say that. Our style is a bit more cool now.

Viveca: Is it a purposeful campaign?

Cristina: Yes it is.

Viveca: Catharina, how come you ended up in this big competition?

Catharina: Well, it was like this, we recorded another song for Polar that wasn't chosen for the competition, but then they managed to get in this other one, 1+1=2, and then they didn't have anyone to perform it, so we got it.

Viveca: Then you got it?

Catharina: Yes.

Viveca: Cristina, how was it to participate in Malmö?

Cristina: Well it was really exciting. Fun!

Viveca: It was? How?

Cristina: Well, you meet a lot of people, and things like that.

Viveca: Were you nervous?

Cristina. A little.

Viveca: Helena, you didn't get to the final, you didn't end up among these five best placed songs.

Helena: No.

Viveca: Does that make you a little disappointed today?

Helena: No, not really. I think, at first you were a bit disappointed, but now, we have recieved so much positive feedback, we heard we made a great performance, a good job, and that's good. It felt right anyhow.

Cristina; Yes.

Viveca: Do you sill like this song, 1+1=2?

Cristina: Yes I really enjoy singing it.

Viveca: Catharina, how many times have you've been singing it, approximately, since you first heard it?

Catharina: I don't know (laugh). It could be one hundred times.

Viveca: And it might be another hundred times? Who knows?

Cristina: Yes, let's hope so.

Viveca: But what happens now, in the future?

Cristina: Well, we're waiting for the reactions now. If it's positive, if we'll get a lot of bookings and so on, because then we'll possibly go touring this summer.

Viveca: There are plans for that?

Cristina: Yes, and then we're going to record a single and an album.

Viveca: Out touring in the parks maybe, Helena?

Helena: Yes, we hope so.

Viveca: You hope for that?

Helena: If there is any interest.

Viveca: So you go for the music now?

All: Yes we do.

Viveca: So you could say that after the Herrey's brothers now comes the Lekander sisters, let's wait and see!

Cristina: Yes.

Anna Book

Anna Book Biography

Anna Book (born in 1970) recorded her first single in 1985, as a result of winning a local talent show the year before. The following summer she was one of the singing children in a tv-show called "Solstollarna", that was very popular in Sweden in the mid 80s. She performed songs that had been written by the show's writers Ola Ström and Per Dunsö, and these can be found on Anna's early albums, e.g. "John" and "Killsnack". Other songs on Anna's debut album were written by Christer Sandelin and Tommy Ekman from the band Style (formerly known as Freestyle).

In 1986 Anna participated in Melodifestivalen, the Swedish pre-selection for Eurovision Song Contest, and ended up 4th. The song "ABC" was a big hit, and is by now a real classic in Sweden. She returned to the competition the next year, this time with a ballad titled "Det finns en morgondag". Unfortunately the success wasn't repeated, and Anna left her record label CBS.

On a small label named Lynx, Anna Book recorded a couple of songs in a more mature style, in 1988. Some of these were written by Per Gessle and Marie Fredriksson – members of the famous Swedish band Roxette. In 1989 Anna Book and Claes Jagborn were collaborating under the name "First unit", and they released a 7" single and a 12" maxi-single. The sound was now more dance-oriented than it had been on Anna's previous records, and she explored new possibilities in her voice. None of her Lynx-singles hit the charts and Anna took a break from her music career.

In 1994 the Swedish TV channel TV3 organized an alternative song competition, in which Anna Book participated together with Chris Lindh, who was rapping. The song "Casanova" was released only as a promo single. In the following year Anna started to collaborate with the famous Swedish producer and hip hop artist Dr. Alban. This resulted in a soul album titled "Anna", that was released in both Sweden and Japan. However, the album wasn't any big success and Anna Book took another break from the music, and started to dub cartoons (e.g. 700 episodes of "Pokémon").

In 2006 Anna made a comeback as a participant in the dance competition "Let's Dance" on Swedish tv channel TV4. In connection to this she released a dance related album of cover versions of famous songs, each suitible for a certain dance style. The first track on the album was "Andalucia" – a newly written song, also released as a single. In the following year Anna took part in Melodifestivalen for the third time, singing "Samba Sambero", and ended up at 9th place among 32 participants.

In 2010 Anna did the Swedish dubbing for Jessie in Disney Pixar's movie "Toy Story 3".
